This wire rope tensioner cylinder series is the core actuator of the riser tensioning system on floating drilling platforms and drillships. It provides hydraulic thrust to the traveling sheave assembly, applying constant, controllable tension to the wire ropes connected to the riser. This action compensates for the vessel's heave motion caused by waves, tide, and current, preventing the riser from buckling under compression or being overstressed in tension. With an ultra-high thrust capability (up to 8,500 kN), materials meeting extreme cold-impact toughness, and a long-life multi-redundant sealing system, the cylinder delivers flawless zero-leakage holding and exceptional operational reliability in deepwater salt spray, heavy swell vibration, and continuous long-term loading — making it an indispensable component for safe floating drilling operations.

Polar-Grade Materials & Low-Temperature Toughness
The barrel, clevises, and piston rod are manufactured from fine-grain, high-strength, high-toughness alloy steel meeting offshore standards (e.g., ABS, DNV). Charpy impact values remain excellent down to -45℃, fully satisfying the stringent demands of polar and cold-water operations and eliminating the risk of brittle fracture.
Ultra-High Thrust & Compact Sheave Integration
Through mechanical advantage provided by the sheave arrangement, the cylinder converts its hydraulic thrust into enormous tension in the wire rope, delivering continuous holding forces of thousands of kN within the limited deck space. The design facilitates either integrated or separate sheave connections, tailored to the customer’s equipment layout.
Absolute Zero-Leakage & Long-Term Holding
A redundant sealing package — hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane U-cup, filled PTFE wear ring, and multiple O-rings — keeps internal leakage below 0.01 ml/min even under months-long holding. This ensures the tensioner maintains constant force without frequent re-pressurization, significantly reducing energy consumption and operating costs of the HPU.
Superior Corrosion Resistance & Marine Adaptability
The piston rod is available with hard chrome, Ni/Cr alloy plating, or plasma-sprayed ceramic coating (chromium oxide) providing over 4,200 hours of neutral salt spray resistance. The cylinder exterior is protected by a marine-grade anti-corrosion coating, and all external fasteners are stainless steel, resisting green water, salt spray, and industrial emissions.
Reliable Cushioning & Locking
A standard integrated high-flow counterbalance valve securely locks the piston position, preventing unexpected riser drop in case of pressure loss, while also providing smooth make-up and return oil damping during heave motion to eliminate hydraulic shock. Optional internal end-of-stroke cushioning further protects sheave assemblies and limit stops.
Intelligent Condition Monitoring & Maintenance
External or internal magnetostrictive displacement sensors, together with pressure transducers, can be integrated to monitor cylinder stroke and tension in real time. These signals enable closed-loop tension control and early warning through the platform’s integrated control system. Sensor mounting configurations facilitate offshore maintenance without cylinder disassembly.
