This folding arm tilt cylinder series is the core actuator for the knuckle boom system of offshore cranes. Mounted between the main boom tip and the folding boom, it hydraulically pushes and pulls the folding boom to pivot around its hinge point, precisely adjusting the hook's working radius and lifting height, or folding the boom against the main boom for stowage during transit. Featuring a bidirectional heavy-duty design with high push force (up to 8,454 kN) and high pull force (up to 3,589 kN) combined with a moderate-to-long stroke, it provides powerful tilting support and precise position control under extreme offshore conditions of swell, salt spray, humidity, and hammer vibration. Integrated with a counterbalance valve, optional ice scraper, and displacement sensor, it adapts to polar ice zones, deep sea, and coastal environments, meeting classification society regulations and offshore lifting safety requirements.

Bidirectional High Push & Pull Design
The barrel is forged from high yield-ratio quenched & tempered alloy steel, with FEA-optimized stress distribution at the gland, flanges, and clevises. All welds undergo 100% UT/MT. The piston rod is a large-diameter solid forging with hard chrome plating or laser-clad nickel-based alloy. It delivers powerful push force when the folding boom is fully extended under full load, and ample pull force to retract the boom against its own weight and wind loads, with rigid output in both directions.
Integrated Counterbalance Valve, Safe Locking
A standard high-flow counterbalance valve or hydraulic lock instantly holds the folding boom at any tilt angle. Even if a hydraulic hose bursts or system pressure is lost, the boom will not free-fall or swing uncontrollably, ensuring absolute safety for deck personnel and lifted cargo.
Optional Ice Scraper for Polar Operations
For polar ice zone operations, a spring-loaded metallic ice scraper can be fitted on the exposed piston rod. It effectively clears ice and frost from the rod surface during retraction, protecting the main seal from ice crystal scoring and ensuring smooth, reliable low-temperature operation.
Position Feedback & Intelligent Control
An optional built-in or external magnetostrictive displacement sensor (±0.5 mm accuracy) provides real-time piston position feedback corresponding to the folding boom tilt angle. This integrates with the vessel control system for precise lifting positioning, limit protection, and remote monitoring.
Comprehensive Marine Anti-Corrosion
The cylinder exterior is coated with a marine-grade heavy-duty coating system. All exposed fasteners are duplex stainless steel. The piston rod is available with hard chrome, Ni/Cr alloy plating, laser cladding, or ceramic spray, with a salt spray resistance exceeding 6,000 hours, ensuring decades of rust-free service in splash zones and salt-laden atmospheres.
Complete Third-Party Certification
Type approval certificates from major classification societies — CCS, ABS, DNV, BV — are available. Full material traceability ensures compliance with IMO and international offshore safety regulations.
Maintenance-Free Pivots & Flexible Mounting
Self-lubricating composite bushings are standard in the clevises, eliminating greasing and withstanding long-term high humidity and salt spray. Mounting dimensions, port orientations, and pin sizes are customized to the hull structure and crane boom hinge points.
