This latch cylinder series (mechanical self-locking type) is the passive safety locking element for the ramp and gangway systems of roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships, mounted in pairs on the hull locking base. Unlike the hydraulic self-locking type, once this cylinder drives the high-strength stainless steel latch pin into the locking hole, an internal mechanical locking mechanism (such as a spring-loaded wedge or cam lock) retains the pin in the engaged position. Thereafter, even if the hydraulic system is completely depressurized, lines rupture, or pressure is lost, the pin will not disengage. Unlocking requires reverse hydraulic pressure to release the mechanical lock before retracting the pin. Arranged in “front locking” and “rear locking” groups for redundant protection, and featuring a standardized bore series (60/80 mm), stainless steel piston rods, and a compact seawater-corrosion-resistant structure, this series has obtained DNVGL type approval. It is the preferred solution for next-generation Ro-Ro ship safety locking, particularly suitable for Ro-Pax vessels and deep-sea route ships with the highest fail-safe requirements against pressure loss.

Pure Mechanical Self-Locking, Zero-Pressure Hold
An internal spring-loaded wedge or cam-type mechanical locking mechanism is incorporated. After hydraulic pressure drives the pin into the locking hole, the mechanical lock automatically engages, rigidly holding the pin in the meshed position. From that moment on, even if the hydraulic power unit shuts down completely, hoses rupture, or the entire ship loses power, the pin remains locked — no hydraulic pressure whatsoever is required to maintain the locked state. Unlocking requires actively applying hydraulic pressure to first release the mechanical lock and then retract the pin. This passive fail-safe characteristic completely eliminates the possibility of unintended release.
Standard Series Design
A standard bore size series of 60/80 mm is offered, with each size having standardized mounting dimensions, port configurations, and pin sizes to facilitate selection by design houses and batch procurement by marine equipment manufacturers. Custom designs are also available for special hull structural requirements.
Stainless Steel Piston Rod & Anti-Corrosion Seals
The piston rod is machined from duplex stainless steel (UNS S32205) solid bar stock, precision polished (Ra≤0.1 μm), providing inherent excellent seawater corrosion resistance. Combined with a hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane U‑cup, filled PTFE support ring, and stainless steel wiper ring, the cylinder is maintenance‑free for life in splash zone and salt‑spray environments.
Redundant Front & Rear Locking
Each ramp system is equipped with front and rear latch cylinder groups, providing double locking protection. Even if one group should fail, the other independently keeps the ramp locked, fully satisfying the redundant safety requirements of DNVGL and SOLAS for locking devices on Ro-Ro equipment.
Status Detection & Intelligent Interlock
Proximity switches or miniature displacement sensors can be integrated to provide real‑time feedback of the compound status: “pin fully engaged & mechanically locked” or “lock released & pin fully disengaged”. Interlocked with the bridge control system, this ensures: the ramp cannot move until the pin is fully disengaged, and the ship cannot depart until the mechanical lock is fully engaged.
Compact Design & Flexible Mounting
The cylinder body is fabricated from high-strength quenched & tempered alloy steel with a marine‑grade anti‑corrosion coating, and its compact envelope fits the tight locking base spaces on the hull. Flange or clevis mounting interfaces are available, with port orientations customizable to piping layouts.
DNVGL Type Approval & Certification
The series has obtained DNVGL type approval, with inspection certificates also available from CCS, ABS, BV and other major classification societies. Full material traceability of all pressure‑containing parts ensures compliance with IMO international maritime safety regulations.
