This mud door cylinder series is the core actuator of the bottom discharge system on trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHD). Mounted in pairs along the hopper sides or at the conical bottom doors, these cylinders open and close the mud doors to rapidly dump the dredged material and ensure a watertight seal during navigation. With a heavy-duty design delivering up to 2,355 kN of pulling force per cylinder, they securely lock the doors against the enormous static head of thousands of tonnes of mud slurry, preventing leakage during transit and avoiding jamming during discharge. Combining high-strength anti-fatigue construction, multi-stage waterproof sealing, and integrated safety valve packages, the cylinders operate reliably for decades in the aggressive conditions of mud, saltwater, high humidity, and frequent cycling. An optional displacement sensor enables real-time door position monitoring.

High Pull Force & Heavy-Duty Locking Design
The barrel is forged from high yield-ratio quenched & tempered alloy steel, with welds subjected to UT/MT and stress relief. The piston rod is a large-diameter thick-walled rod or forging with hard chrome plating or laser-clad nickel-based alloy protection. Under thousands of kN of pulling force holding the doors closed, the cylinder remains completely rigid, preventing any deformation or unintended opening due to slurry weight and water pressure.
Multi-Stage Waterproof & Slurry-Resistant Sealing
The gland features a three-stage defense of “polyurethane wiper + stainless steel scraper + labyrinth seal.” The main seal is a hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane and filled PTFE composite. Even under prolonged immersion in high-sand slurry and seawater, zero external leakage is maintained, with internal leakage held to ≤0.03 ml/min. Maintenance-free intervals span the entire vessel overhaul cycle.
Integrated Safety Counterbalance Valve & Cushioning
A standard high-flow counterbalance valve or dual pilot-operated check valve locks the doors closed instantly, keeping them watertight even if hydraulic hoses rupture. An internal end-of-stroke cushion absorbs impact at full open and full closed positions, protecting the hinge points and cylinder body.
Displacement Sensor for Intelligent Monitoring
An optional built-in or external magnetostrictive displacement sensor (±0.3 mm accuracy) provides real-time mud door position feedback. Integrated with the bridge dredging control system, it enables door status display, remote operation, and interlock protection, enhancing dumping safety and efficiency.
Comprehensive Anti-Corrosion & Flexible Mounting
The cylinder exterior is coated with marine-grade heavy-duty epoxy. All fasteners are stainless steel. The piston rod is available with hard chrome, Ni/Cr alloy plating, ceramic spray, or laser-clad corrosion-resistant alloy (≥6,000 h salt spray). Self-lubricating composite bushings in the clevises eliminate greasing. Mounting dimensions and port orientations are customized to the hull structure.
