This spud cylinder is the core actuator of the positioning and stepping system on cutter suction dredgers (CSD). Vertically mounted within the stern spud frame, it hydraulically lowers the spud (anchor pile) into the seabed to fix the vessel in position, and raises it for recovery. During dredging, one spud is planted in the seabed as a pivot while the other is raised; the vessel then swings around the pivot using side winches to cut material. For advancing, the cylinders lift and lower the spuds alternately in a stepping motion. Featuring an ultra-high push/pull force (up to 7,500 kN push / 5,000 kN pull) and a long stroke (up to 5,200 mm), the cylinder maintains smooth lifting and reliable locking under the huge side loads caused by the weight of the spud, water resistance, and vessel sway. Integrated multi-stage waterproofing, side-load resistant guiding, and safety valve packages ensure maintenance-free operation over the long term in inland, coastal, and offshore environments with high salt spray and sediment.

Max push force: 7,500 kN (at 32 MPa, Φ620 mm bore, for lowering/implanting the spud)
Max pull force: 5,000 kN (at 32 MPa, rod diameter matched, for extracting the spud against suction)
Breakaway pressure: ≤0.5 MPa
Piston velocity: 0.02 – 0.15 m/s (smooth lift/lower, avoiding impact to the vessel)
Operating frequency: 1–2 minutes per lift/lower cycle during stepping; tens to hundreds of cycles daily
Internal leakage: ≤0.03 ml/min (at 25 MPa, over full service life)
Static holding: ≤1.5 mm piston drift over 7 days under full load (with counterbalance valve/hydraulic lock)

Suitable vessel: cutter suction dredgers, spud diameter 800–2,000 mm, working water depth 10–50 m
Ultra-High Push/Pull & Heavy-Duty Construction
The barrel is forged from high yield-ratio quenched & tempered alloy steel or ultra-heavy-wall tube, with FEA-optimized stress at gland, cap, and clevis. All welds undergo 100% UT/MT. The piston rod is a large-diameter solid forging protected by precision hard chrome plating or laser-clad corrosion-resistant alloy. The cylinder provides ample bidirectional force to overcome suction at the spud tip and vessel rolling moments during both lowering and extraction.
Superior Side-Load Resistant Guiding
An extended guide bushing combined with wide, high-capacity composite guide rings fully absorbs the significant side forces generated by vessel sway and current when the spud is being raised or lowered, preventing rod scoring, bending, and premature seal failure.
Fail-Safe Locking & Redundant Protection
Standard high-flow counterbalance valve or dual pilot-operated check valve instantaneously locks the spud at any position — even if a hydraulic hose bursts — preventing the spud from free-falling or accidentally floating up, ensuring vessel and crew safety.
Multi-Stage Waterproof & Anti-Sediment Seals
Multiple polyurethane wipers, a stainless steel scraper ring, and a labyrinth seal at the gland effectively block seawater, mud, sand, and bio-fouling. The main seal employs a hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane and filled PTFE composite with stainless steel backup rings, maintaining zero external leakage under continuous immersion and splash, preventing any hydraulic fluid contamination of the water environment.
Built-In Cushioning & Intelligent Monitoring
An internal end-of-stroke cushioning mechanism can be designed to absorb impact when the spud hits the seabed or reaches its top limit, protecting the spud frame structure. An optional built-in magnetostrictive displacement sensor (±0.3 mm accuracy) provides real-time spud penetration depth and cylinder stroke feedback, integrating with the cutter control system for precise positioning.
Full Corrosion Protection & Maintenance-Free Pivots
The cylinder exterior is coated with marine-grade heavy-duty epoxy. The piston rod is available with hard chrome, ceramic spray, or laser cladding. All fasteners are stainless steel. Self-lubricating composite bushings or seawater-resistant spherical bearings at both clevises eliminate greasing and remain flexible and reliable under high loads and heavy mud/water conditions.
